Advanced air mobility startup The ePlane Company has announced a strategic partnership with Dubai-based Empire Aviation Group to accelerate the deployment of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles in India, UAE, Thailand, and Indonesia. The collaboration aims to fast-track the rollout of eVTOL air taxis and air ambulances, strengthening urban air mobility solutions across these key markets.
As part of the partnership, Empire Aviation Group, known for its expertise in aviation operations, will provide support in safety protocols, standard operating procedures, and fleet management, facilitating ePlane&rsquo;s market entry.
This announcement follows reports that The ePlane Company recently signed a $1 billion deal with Bengaluru-based ICATT to introduce 766 air ambulances across India.
Founded in 2019 by IIT Madras professor Satya Chakravarthy, The ePlane Company is developing India&rsquo;s first electric flying taxi, addressing traffic congestion in metro cities. The company&rsquo;s eVTOLs boast a range of 110 km, a top speed of 200 km/h, and the capacity to carry two passengers or a payload of 200 kg.
Beyond urban air mobility, The ePlane Company is also advancing its drone solutions, including agricultural drones and a 2 kg payload eVTOL drone, both expected to receive certification by early 2025. These drones, designed for logistics, inspections, and long-distance deliveries, have already drawn interest from the agriculture and logistics sectors.
India&rsquo;s eVTOL market is still in its nascent stages, but investor interest is rising. Last month, aerospace startup Sarla Aviation raised $10 million in a Series A round led by Accel, reflecting growing confidence in flying taxi services. Meanwhile, India&rsquo;s civil aircraft fleet has more than doubled since 2014, increasing from approximately 400 to over 800 aircraft, with further growth anticipated due to government support and major orders from carriers like Air India, IndiGo, and Akasa Air.
