Ola Electric has issued a clarification stating that its reported sales figures for February 2025 represent fully paid customer orders, and not preliminary bookings with token amounts, as suggested by recent media reports.
In an official statement released Tuesday, the electric two-wheeler manufacturer said that &ldquo;nearly 90 per cent&rdquo; of the February orders were paid in full at the time of placement. &ldquo;To be clear, the sales figures for February 2025 represent genuine customer demand backed by financial commitment, not token-amount bookings,&rdquo; the company said.
The clarification comes amid scrutiny over Ola&rsquo;s sales data, following reports that bookings for yet-to-be-launched vehicles were counted in the February sales tally &mdash; raising questions about potential inflation of market share data during a critical period for the company as it seeks to rebuild investor confidence.
Ola specified that the figures include fully paid customer orders for its new products, the Gen 3 e-scooter and Roadster X motorcycle, which were available for full purchase &mdash; not just pre-booking &mdash; in February. However, deliveries for the Gen 3 began in March, while the Roadster X is yet to be rolled out.
The company also addressed discrepancies between its reported figures and government registration data. According to Ola, the February sales of 25,207 &ldquo;confirmed orders&rdquo; included 10,866 Gen 3 scooters and 1,395 Roadster X motorcycles. In contrast, data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways&rsquo; VAHAN portal recorded only around 8,600 Ola vehicle registrations during the same period.
The Ministry, in a letter dated March 31, asked Ola to revise its reported sales to include only invoiced and delivered vehicles. It also warned of &ldquo;adverse action&rdquo; if the company failed to clarify the mismatch within seven days.
Ola attributed the registration gap to a temporary disruption in its routine registration process due to an in-house transition for efficiency purposes. The company also cited ongoing renegotiations with two vendors, which it said delayed the registration process during the reporting period.
&ldquo;Our tech-enabled direct-to-consumer sales model has upended specific automotive distribution and sales practices,&rdquo; Ola Electric added in its statement.
Ola&rsquo;s market share has seen a decline, dropping to 39% in July and further to 33% in August 2024. Meanwhile, shares of Ola Electric Mobility Ltd have experienced volatility, dipping below ₹50 apiece in March following a lawsuit by a high-security number plate vendor over unpaid dues. The stock fell over 7% on March 17 and another 4.4% on March 26.
