Mayank Kumar, co-founder of edtech giant upGrad, and Ayush Mathur, a former senior leader at OYO, have joined forces to launch BorderPlus, a platform designed to bridge the gap between India&rsquo;s blue-collar workforce and international employment opportunities.
Addressing Global Labor Shortages
With a growing demand for workers in sectors like hospitality and healthcare in countries such as Germany and Denmark, BorderPlus aims to leverage India&rsquo;s large working-age population to address these global shortages. The platform&rsquo;s initial focus is on Germany&rsquo;s healthcare sector, where it is piloting its first batch of candidates. Future expansion plans include sectors such as hospitality, retail, teaching, construction, logistics, and trucking across multiple regions.
Training for Success
BorderPlus offers a six to nine-month training program, with the final one to two months conducted offline to focus on language practice. The company&rsquo;s first training center is operational in Pune, with a second facility launched in Mumbai. Additional centers are planned nationwide to support final-stage training.
Each batch currently accommodates 20&ndash;30 students monthly, but the co-founders aim to transition to weekly batches as the platform scales. To enhance language learning, BorderPlus is developing an AI-powered chatbot, leveraging OpenAI&rsquo;s technology to provide interactive language practice for candidates.
A Vision for Global Placement
Mayank Kumar, who continues to play a strategic role at upGrad, believes India&rsquo;s demographic strength positions it as a global talent supplier. Drawing parallels with the IT services boom, he emphasizes that training and placing Indian workers abroad can unlock immense opportunities.
Ayush Mathur, whose tenure at OYO included leading European operations, conceptualized BorderPlus after observing severe labor shortages in hospitality roles, particularly in housekeeping. He asserts that Indian workers, with proper training, are culturally adaptable and well-suited to fill these gaps.
Scaling the Initiative
BorderPlus is committed to meeting the needs of international employers while offering Indian workers pathways to better career prospects. With plans to increase candidate intake and expand into additional sectors, the startup is poised to make a significant impact on the global labor market.
