Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering &amp; Infrastructures Ltd (MEIL) has received a formal purchase order worth ₹12,800 crore from the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL) for constructing two 700 MWe nuclear power reactors &mdash; Kaiga units 5 and 6 &mdash; in Karnataka. This engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) project marks MEIL's entry into the nuclear power sector.
NPCIL selected MEIL for the project using the Quality-cum-Cost-Based Selection (QCBS) method for the first time. The method emphasizes a balance between technical merit and cost-efficiency. MEIL outbid established players such as BHEL and L&amp;T, winning the contract for its robust technical proposal and competitive pricing.
The company highlighted that this is the single largest order ever awarded by NPCIL. MEIL, active in sectors like power, irrigation, transport, defence, hydrocarbons, and electric mobility, continues expanding its global presence. In September 2023, it bagged a $648 million contract to build a crude oil refinery for Mongolia&rsquo;s state-owned Mongol Refinery LLC.
The Kaiga project aligns with India&rsquo;s broader clean energy goals. The country plans to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030. Currently, India has an installed nuclear power capacity of 8.18 GW. As per data from the Union Ministry of Power, around 14.3 GW of nuclear capacity is under implementation or planning, with 7.3 GW already under construction.
In addition, the government is pushing forward on small modular reactors to address land-related challenges, accelerating efforts to triple nuclear power capacity by 2032.
