Agri-biotech startup GreenGrahi has raised ₹32 crore ($3.73 million) in a seed funding round led by Avaana Capital, marking the largest-ever funding round in India's emerging insect biotechnology sector.
The round also saw participation from Huddle Ventures, Campus Fund, Blume Founders Fund, and prominent angel investors including Nitin Sharma of Nexus Ventures and Sameer Brij Verma of Northpoint Capital.
Focus on Expansion and Global Market Entry
The Delhi-based startup plans to utilise the funds to build a homegrown Black Soldier Fly (BSF) factory, capable of processing 150 tonnes of agricultural feedstock daily. Additionally, the company will strengthen its scientific team and expand operations to international markets, including the United States, United Kingdom, and European Union.
Founded in 2021 by Shivali Sugand and Siddharth Sharma, GreenGrahi leverages insect biotechnology to produce high-performance proteins, functional oils, and hydrolysates for industries like aquaculture, poultry, and pet nutrition. The company also offers a new generation of biological agricultural inputs&mdash;such as biofertilisers, biostimulants, and biopesticides&mdash;aimed at improving soil health and reducing dependence on chemical-based solutions.
Scaling Up to Meet Soaring Demand
GreenGrahi currently supplies over 10 B2B customers in the animal and plant nutrition sectors and reports a pipeline demand of ₹560 crore. However, with its current facility processing just 3&ndash;4 tonnes per day, scaling remains critical. The upcoming factory, expected to be operational by end of 2025, will boost capacity nearly 50-fold.
&ldquo;Our next facility will be a game-changer, enabling us to meet both domestic and international demand,&rdquo; said Co-founder Siddharth Sharma. &ldquo;We anticipate starting global shipments by the first quarter of next year.&rdquo;
The startup estimates that 30&ndash;35% of its future revenue will come from overseas markets, particularly driven by the pet food segment.
Tackling Environmental and Economic Challenges
GreenGrahi&rsquo;s platform repurposes agricultural residues through insect bioconversion, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional feed ingredients like fishmeal and soy&mdash;both of which are under scrutiny due to ecological and pricing concerns.
&ldquo;GreenGrahi is creating category-shaping innovation in the food and agri-tech space,&rdquo; said Shruti Srivastava, Investment Director at Avaana Capital. &ldquo;Their proprietary bioprocessing platform enables production of high-performance, cost-efficient ingredients at scale, supporting resilient food supply chains and global food security.&rdquo;
Avaana Capital, which raised $150 million last year for its climate and sustainability-focused fund, has already deployed nearly one-third of its corpus.
